A Suffolk-born artist who launched From the Studio Floor – an art exhibition showcasing a selection of contemporary unseen artworks and new talent – has taken the show concept overseas following the success of its London and Ipswich exhibitions in the last two years.

Jessica Oliver, young artist and the curator of the From the Studio Floor art series, is now collaborating with established New Zealand artist, Lisa Rayner, to host a follow up pop-up exhibition this month in Hamilton, just south of Auckland.

Jessica comments: “I travelled to New Zealand shortly after the Suffolk art exhibition and I very quickly immersed myself in the art scene. It was the success of the Ipswich show that inspired me to spend the winter painting and exploring my way around new landscapes – and it wasn’t long before I found the potential for another exhibition with the help of some extraordinary artists this side of the world – an opportunity too exciting to miss.”

Sponsored by MLM, From the Studio Floor opened its doors for three days at Ipswich Town Hall, where it featured a dynamic collection of paintings, sculptures, installations and drawings. Over 140 artists in the region applied for their work to be featured – with the final selection being viewed by over 350 people on the opening night alone. Each piece on display was unique to the show and had never been seen before, straight from the artists’ studio floors. For many of the artists it was the first time they had ever exhibited, while professionals were able to platform new ideas.

The New Zealand show will be very similar to the Suffolk exhibition, Jessica explains: “The adaptability of the From the Studio Floor concept is a part of its charm, and is a great way to showcase new ideas, paintings, sculptures and encourage artists to be ambitious with themselves and their current work. We will be showcasing the work of 24 established artists and proceeds from the sales will be donated to NZ Kids First Hospital for our charity element.”

From the Studio Floor will be returning to UK shores later this year with a gallery opening in Cambridge this autumn and in London the following spring.

Organisers of Suffolk art exhibition, From the Studio Floor, have hailed the show a success after hundreds of people came to view the work of 25 artists who live, work or derive inspiration from the region.

The gallery opened its doors for three days at Ipswich Town Hall this November, where the pop-up exhibition featured an eclectic mix of paintings, sculptures, light installations and drawings by the most promising art talent with a link to Suffolk. Each piece on display was unique to the show and had never been seen before, straight from the artists’ “studio floors”. For many of the artists it was the first time they had ever exhibited, while professionals were able to unveil new collections.

“With the help of our sponsors, MLM, and all of the artists involved, we have been able to showcase our region’s creativity,” commented Jessica Oliver, curator of From the Studio Floor. “The diverse range of artwork we had on display had one unifying element – talent -and I feel truly optimistic for the Suffolk art scene.”

Many of the artists have been so pleased with the positive feedback from visitors and buzz generated from the exhibition that they have been inspired to create new collections. Many sold their works during the show and others have benefitted by gaining commissions.

“Unseen artwork was enjoyed, critiqued and talked about in the positive way artists buried in the countryside always need. Not only were the artists pleased to be part of the show, but they were delighted to be given the opportunity to help raise awareness for the arts today in Ipswich. Hopefully together, through From the Studio Floor, we have been able to awaken a new vibrancy to the contemporary art scene in Suffolk.”

Art lovers and artists, schools and businesses from all corners of Suffolk and East Anglia were all among the visitors to the gallery, which saw over 350 people attend on its opening night alone. The exhibition raised over £1,000 for Children in Need after 15% of artwork sales were donated.

From the Studio Floor’s Suffolk gallery marks the second in a series of shows following its initial launch in London earlier this year. Due to the success of the exhibition, organisers have already expressed there will be many more of its kind to come locally and nationally.

National exhibition of art, From the Studio Floor, has announced the shortlist for its upcoming show in Suffolk after over 150 artists applied for their work to be featured.

Taking place at Gallery 3, Cornhill from 12-15 November 2015, the exhibition will be showcasing never-before seen works by the most promising art talent with a link to Suffolk. The shortlist has been revealed after artists who live, work or derive inspiration from the region were given the opportunity to submit a piece of work for inclusion in the show.

“We’re utterly thrilled with the amount of interest the show has generated. We’ve received such a high number of entries from both aspiring and established artists – and we hope this is the first of many exhibitions of its kind in the region,” comments Jessica Oliver, artist and curator of From the Studio Floor.

Due to the tremendous response, the number of artists that will be featured at the show has increased from 20 to 25, with selected works including a variety of paintings, sculptures, drawings, light installations, prints, landscapes, portraits, conceptual and traditional artworks.

International artist and curator of Ipswich’s ‘The Never-ending Mural’, John D Edwards joined artist and curator of the exhibition, Jessica Oliver, alongside sponsors, MLM, on the judging panel during the selection process.

“It’s a very exciting time for the art scene in Ipswich,” comments John. “The region offers a very high calibre of talent and this exhibition will be showcasing the works of artists with a link to Suffolk. The show is an ideal platform to show the community, businesses and fellow artists further afield and in London what the region has to offer. It demonstrates that artists can produce wonderful art wherever they are based.”

The exhibition is proudly sponsored by Ipswich-based MLM. Firmly embedded in the town for 50 years, MLM has grown into a national and international consultancy and has a strong culture of supporting community projects. Steve Oliver, Chairman at MLM comments: “It’s important for us to be supporting such an exciting event with some amazingly varied art. Our engagement with community-based arts projects goes back to our original sponsorship of ‘the Never Ending Mural’ in Ipswich, as well as City and Guilds London Art School undergraduate shows – and this exhibition allows us to work again with talented amateurs, professionals and post-graduates as part of our ongoing sponsorship of the Arts. We hope this project will inspire businesses, artists and the community to work closer together – the Suffolk art community has a lot to celebrate.”

The shortlist includes a wide variety of unseen works from artists including: Sarah Bale, Mark Batty, Estella Castle, Stuart Coy, Louise Craigie, John Dawkins, Jonathon Kennedy, Lloyd Evans, Emily Godden, Leigh Hammett, Ania Hobson, Spage Hopkins, Grace Kebby, Laura Leahy, Fabiana Di Mascio, Maria Marklove, Susie Mendelsson, Jason Nunn, George Sarson, Ben Tambaschi, Janice Williams, Michael Williams and Stephen J Worrall.

From the Studio Floor, to renowned Gallery walls

From the Studio Floor, a National Exhibition of art, will be opening its doors in Ipswich this autumn, where it will be showcasing the collective artwork of local artists and art lovers, who live, work or derive inspiration from the region.

After its début in London, From the Studio Floor is the second in a series of exhibitions dedicated to bringing the works of artists together and spotlighting hidden talent. With the help of its sponsors, MLM, the exhibition has secured a venue in the heart of Ipswich, where it will be featuring a selection of new unseen conceptual works, etchings, installations, sculptures, drawings and paintings.

Taking place over three days in November 2015, the exhibition will provide an informal and relaxed setting, featuring a selection of new unseen conceptual works from 15-20 artists, which will be showcased in the gallery and available for the public to purchase.

“We launched From the Studio Floor at Anise Gallery in Bermondsey where we displayed a collection of various artwork from London artists. It was so successful, with such momentum building around the show we wanted to grow the exhibition nationally,” said Jessica Oliver, Artist and Curator at From the Studio Floor.

Based in London, Jessica Oliver is a young artist from Suffolk and former Ipswich School pupil who’s talent has caught the attention of many after being named the Artistic Spaces’ ‘One to Watch’ at the prestigious Mall Galleries’ FBA Futures 2015. Having studied classical painting in Florence, Italy, and after pursuing a degree in Fine Art Painting at City and Guilds of London Art School, Jessica is currently exhibiting in London and Suffolk and is curating the series of From the Studio Floor exhibitions.

Jessica continues: “The show will be tantalising the town with the recently completed works from artists’ studio floors as well as giving us a taste of what they will be working on next. With such a rich history of arts in the area, it’s a great opportunity to showcase what the region has to offer and provide artists with an opportunity to connect and platform new ideas and artworks.”

The exhibition is proudly sponsored by Ipswich-based MLM, whose roots are firmly embedded in the town throughout its growth into an international multidisciplinary engineering, environmental and building control consultancy.

From the Studio Floor will premier on Thursday, November 12 and will be open to the public from Friday, November 13 until Sunday, November 15 at Gallery 3, Cornhill, Ipswich. Entry to the exhibition is free. For more information and details on the artists, visit: www.fromthestudiofloor.co.uk.
